Essay in IIMs Process

IIM Indore now has a Written Ability Test instead of a GD in the second stage of admissions for PGP. Though the weightage of the WAT or the Essay is not clear yet, it is expected to be on the lines of IIM Bangalore where the Note/Essay has 15% weightage out of 35% for the 2nd stage. In effect, IIM Bangalore assigns 43% weightage to the Essay and 57% to the Interview in the 2nd stage.

IIMK has assigned a weightage of 20% to the writing task(Essay) while a 35% weigtage to Personal Interview. Though the relative weightage of Essay as compared to Interview is lesser (36%) than in IIMB, but considering that the absolute weightage is higher (20%) it plays an even important role in the selection.A very high discretionary weightage has been assigned to Profiles(15%) which makes it even tougher for the most common aspirant of the Common Admission Test, the Male-Engineering candidate. A good performance at the Essay and PI is hence necessary for selection at IIMK.

IIML has a Essay/Written Ability Test with a 10% weightage and a GD on the same topic for another 10%.  Interview has a 25% weightage. So, in effect the Essay has 20% and Interview 25% weightage. Here, too the weightage mimics the IIMK pattern, but is a bit more friendly with very low weightage to the profile and lower weightage to Interview as well.Stage-1 scores have a higher weightage of 50% as compared to just 30% in IIMK.

Stage 1 scores are generally very close for most of the shortlisted candidates. Even if there is a 5% range, with a 50-70% weightage assigned to the PI stage, it can be easily overcome. This was the main reason why many 100 percentilers did not get admission call in IIMB last year. CAT scores do not matter much. What matters is how you perform in the Essay, GD and the Personal Interview.

Best of Luck to all for the next stage!!
